How do I make the most of a 10 minute appointment?

It can help to decide before you go what you most need from the appointment, and to mention it near the start. A short written summary of how things have been since last time, and two or three questions, can make the time easier to use. If it is easier than saying it, you can hand the summary over. Before you leave, it is worth asking what happens next and noting the answer. Ten minutes can go quickly, so a little preparation beforehand often makes the appointment feel less rushed.

Before you go

  • Pick the one thing you most need help with this time.
  • Write a short summary: what has been going on, how it has been, what changed.
  • Keep a list of your medicines to hand, including supplements.
  • Write down up to three questions, most important first.

In the room

  • It can help to start with the main thing: "The main thing I would like help with today is..."
  • Details help: when it happens, how often, and what it makes harder for you.
  • If there is not time for everything, you can ask about booking another appointment for the rest.
  • You can ask what to do if things get worse before you are seen again.

Before you leave

  • Saying the plan back in your own words can help check you both understood the same thing.
  • Ask who to contact with a question, and how.
  • Note when your next appointment is, or when to book one.

My appointment

  • The one thing I most need help with
  • A short summary of how things have been
  • My medicines, including supplements
  • Up to three questions, most important first
  • What happens next, written down before I leave

The summary takes a couple of minutes, needs no account, and nothing is saved.
