What should I ask at my IBD clinic appointment?
It can help to go in with a short summary of how things have been since your last appointment: how often you have been going, any flares and how long they lasted, and what they made harder. Two or three questions, most important first, are usually enough for one appointment. Many IBD services have a specialist nurse or advice line, and it is worth checking how to reach yours if things change before you are seen again.
Since your last appointment
- How often you have been going, on a typical day and on a bad one.
- Any flares: when they started, how long they lasted, and what they made harder.
- Any blood, mucus, pain or urgency, and when.
- Tiredness, appetite, weight, sleep or mood.
- Time off work, or plans you had to change.
About the plan
- How will we know whether what we are doing is working?
- What should I do, and who do I contact, if I have a flare before next time?
- Do any of my medicines need regular blood tests, and who arranges them?
- Is there anything you would like me to keep track of?
Other things you could ask
- Is there an IBD nurse or advice line I can contact?
- Could I see a dietitian?
- Where can I read more that you trust?
If things change quickly
- If you feel very unwell, or notice a lot of blood, you do not need to wait for your appointment. Contact your GP or NHS 111 the same day, or call 999 in an emergency.

The summary takes a couple of minutes, needs no account, and nothing is saved.
